LUNAR NEW YEAR

Chinese New Year, also known as the Lunar New Year or Spring Festival, is a significant traditional holiday celebrated by Chinese communities worldwide. It marks the beginning of the lunar calendar, typically falling between late January and mid-February. In 2025, Chinese New Year is on 29th January.

The festival is steeped in customs aimed at ushering in prosperity and good fortune. Preparations often begin with thorough cleaning of homes to eliminate misfortune and make way for incoming luck. Families adorn their residences with red decorations, such as couplets and lanterns, symbolising happiness and success. A central aspect of the celebration is the reunion dinner on New Year’s Eve, where family members gather to enjoy a lavish meal featuring dishes like fish, which signifies abundance, and niangao (rice cakes), representing higher achievements in the coming year.

The festivities extend over 15 days, each with its own significance. Common practices include visiting relatives and friends to exchange blessings, giving red envelopes containing money to children and unmarried adults as a gesture of good luck, and participating in vibrant lion and dragon dances that are believed to ward off evil spirits. The celebration culminates with the Lantern Festival, where communities come together to enjoy lantern displays and traditional performances.

Pandan, a fragrant tropical plant commonly used in Southeast Asian cuisine, imparts a unique aroma and flavour that resonates with the essence of the celebration. Alongside our classic Pandan doughnut, with its vibrant green hue and distinctive taste, our Pandan Lamington doughnut is the perfect accompaniment. Our cake doughnut is coated in pandan glaze and filled with a rich white chocolate and pandan ganache. For those who prefer bite-sized treats, we also have a mini version of our Pandan doughnut.
