What is Fat Thursday (Tłusty Czwartek)?

With Fat Thursday coming up at the end of the month, we want to take the time to give you a little run down on what this national Polish holiday is all about and get you prepared for the feast.

So, what is Fat Thursday?

Fat Thursday is one of Poland’s tastiest traditions, it’s a national holiday also known as Tłusty Czwartek. For many, it is the last day to consume sweet treats, alcohol, and more delish delights, more specifically, doughnuts.

Taking place on the last Thursday before the traditional Christian festival, Lent begins and prior to Ash Wednesday. This year, Fat Thursday will be taking place on Thursday 8th February 2024.

The top choice of sweet treat for this special day is often Pączek, a large doughnut filled with marmalade and sugar glaze, or Faworki, crispy, melt-in-your-mouth dough which has been fried and sprinkled with powdered sugar.

To seasonal flavours like:

Pandan Lamington- Our pandan-infused cake dough provides a soft and sweet base for the doughnut, with a hint of herbal freshness. We then add white chocolate and pandan ganache which perfectly complements the cake layers. The doughnut is then hand dipped in vibrant pandan icing, to provide a sweet, aromatic layer before being generous coated in desiccated coconut, for a subtle contrasting crunch.

Peanut Butter & Blackcurrant – A vegan sourdough with a blackcurrant compote, deep roasted peanut butter glaze and roasted peanuts.
